7 Million UK Premises* Affected by Copper Network Phase-Out

January 2025: BT Openreach has announced a significant expansion of the new all-IP telephone network adding 163 new exchange locations where copper-based phone and broadband will no longer be sold. This latest development affects nearly one million additional premises, bringing the total number to approximately seven million.

Digital Transformation Raises Concerns for Elderly Population

This transition marks a crucial step towards modernising Britain’s telecommunications infrastructure, offering business users advanced features and cost savings. However, recent research by Zen Internet highlights growing concerns about the impact on elderly and infirm phone users.

According to the study, 66% of people worry that elderly relatives and friends could face increased isolation and loneliness as traditional landline services are phased out.

The survey reveals a concerning knowledge gap: despite being the demographic most reliant on traditional landline phones for communication, only 39% of people over 55 are adequately informed about the upcoming digital transition. This lack of awareness is particularly troubling given senior citizens’ widespread use of analogue cordless phones, often integrated with vital care call type systems.

Critical Timeline: Preparing for the 2027 Switch-off

With the end of analogue services scheduled for January 2027, families face mounting pressure to help elderly and vulnerable relatives prepare for the change. Transitioning to an all-digital network presents challenges for older adults who depend on analogue monitoring devices for emergency assistance.

What This Means for Your Family

With less than 2 years to the PSTN switch off, taking proactive steps is crucial to ensure a smooth transition to the digital network for your elderly relatives.

You should:

  • Understand your relatives’ current setup and identify which devices and services might need upgrading
  • Discuss the changes with family members to address concerns early.
  • Explore modern digital alternatives that can maintain both communication and safety features

Looking Ahead

The migration to full-fibre connections represents a significant technological advancement, but its success will largely depend on how well we support vulnerable populations through this transition. As BT Openreach continues to expand its digital infrastructure, ensuring no one is left behind; becomes increasingly essential.
